Microsoft on Friday, October 16 confirmed a free firmware update for the October 2024 version of the Xbox Wireless Headset that introduces support for Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) Audio, a standard designed to improve power efficiency and audio performance.
What Bluetooth LE Audio brings to the headset
The update’s headline feature is adoption of Bluetooth LE Audio, which offers several technical advantages over classic Bluetooth. According to Microsoft, these include lower latency, longer battery life and clearer voice chat.
- Lower latency: reduced delay between audio and video, improving synchronization during games and video playback.
- Longer battery life: more efficient power consumption enables longer sessions between charges.
- Improved voice clarity: better voice quality for in-game and other chat.
- Audio sharing (preview): on Windows 11, users can stream audio to multiple compatible Bluetooth accessories simultaneously.
These enhancements target both PC players on Windows 11 and users of portable devices such as the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X, aiming to deliver a more consistent and richer wireless audio experience.

Compatibility and availability
Microsoft clarified that Bluetooth LE Audio support is available only for the headset model released in October 2024. Owners of that specific version can apply the free firmware update to gain the new features.
Device background and pricing note
The Xbox Wireless Headset is an official Microsoft accessory built for direct integration with Xbox consoles, PCs and mobile devices. Prior to this update, the product already offered spatial audio, intuitive controls and a design intended for extended use.

Earlier in the year the headset’s price rose from US$99 to US$119. Microsoft’s free addition of Bluetooth LE Audio may increase the headset’s appeal for buyers seeking improved wireless connectivity and performance.
