Sony reached an agreement in December 2025 to permanently transfer 429 patents related to virtual reality technologies to Meta, the company behind the Quest headset line, according to ZDNet. The deal adds uncertainty to Sony’s VR plans after the release of PlayStation VR2.
Scope and timing of the patent transfer
About 43 of the patents were already transferred between June and September 2026, the report says. The technologies covered include VR applications, display manufacturing methods and multiple headset and goggle designs.
The patents were originally filed by PlayStation between 2010 and 2022, a period that spans development of both generations of the brand’s VR headsets. The full portfolio of 429 records comprises roughly 180 U.S. filings and 213 filings in other markets, including Japan, China, South Korea and Europe.
Neither Sony nor Meta has issued a public comment on the transaction so far.
Implications for PlayStation VR2

PlayStation VR2 launched in February 2023 as a major Sony effort to expand PS5 experiences but struggled to reach a broad audience. Factors cited for its commercial challenges include a $550 initial U.S. price, a limited catalogue of exclusive games and diminishing manufacturer support.
Sony later released an adapter to enable PS VR2 compatibility with PCs, widening potential use cases, yet the headset remained aimed at a relatively niche user base.
The transfer of these patents to Meta has intensified perceptions that Sony may be scaling back investments in virtual reality. However, the move does not constitute an official confirmation that the PlayStation VR line is ending.
To date, Sony has not announced a successor to the PS VR2 or clarified how the patent transfer will affect its future VR projects.
