Nintendo published its first video about the Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday, March 16, and said it expects to release the new console in 2025. The company did not provide a specific launch date.
Company to share full details at Nintendo Direct on April 2, 2025
Nintendo said it will reveal further information during a Nintendo Direct presentation scheduled for April 2, 2025. The announcement on March 16 sets expectations that the Direct will focus on the Switch 2.
Video shows a larger console with several design changes
The official video released by Nintendo presents a device that resembles the original Switch but is noticeably larger, matching aspects previously seen in a replica shown at CES 2025.
Design and hardware details highlighted in the footage include:
- Joy-Con controllers in black with colored accents that attach at the sides of the console rather than sliding off and on;
- Joy-Con controllers appear to be usable in a manner similar to a mouse;
- SL and SR buttons on the Joy-Con are larger than on the original Switch;
- a new USB-C port located on the top of the console;
- a new button positioned below the Home button on the right Joy-Con (a feature that had appeared in prior leaks);
- a redesigned kickstand with a U-like shape;
- a more rounded design for the Switch 2 dock.
Accessories and backward compatibility
As with the original Switch, Nintendo will offer a separate stand for controllers that accepts the Joy-Cons. The only game shown in the video appears to be a new Mario Kart title.

Nintendo said the Switch 2 will be compatible with both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but the company warned that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be compatible or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.”
