Donkey Kong 64 gets native PC build without generative AI

More than 25 years after its original release, Donkey Kong 64 can now run natively on PC thanks to an unofficial project called DK64 Rekongpiled, a group effort that recompiles the Nintendo 64 title to run on modern hardware.

Native rebuild, not an emulator

Unlike an emulator, DK64 Rekongpiled translates and recompiles the game’s code so it executes directly on current computers. Users still need access to an original Donkey Kong 64 ROM to use the build.

Higher resolution, higher frame rates and mouse controls

The project preserves the original game’s content — including its graphics, soundtrack and core gameplay structure — while adding PC-oriented features. Among the enhancements are support for higher display resolutions, increased frame rates and the option to play using mouse controls.

Donkey Kong 64 was originally released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, developed by Rare and featuring multiple members of the Kong family as playable characters.

Developers emphasize no generative AI was used

The development team has highlighted that no generative artificial intelligence tools were used during the project. That claim appears in the release trailer and in a post by 2dos, one of the project’s contributors.

According to reporting cited by the team, development began roughly two months earlier after the programmers observed a separate, similar effort that relied heavily on AI-generated code. 2dos said that using AI in that way could make the codebase increasingly hard to maintain as the project grew.

A modern alternative that preserves the original

DK64 Rekongpiled offers an alternative method to play Donkey Kong 64 on contemporary PCs, keeping the original game’s content intact while introducing features expected from a modern PC version.
