Sony reminds users digital PlayStation games are licensed

Sony has reminded PlayStation Network users that purchasing a game from the PlayStation Store grants a license to use the software rather than transferring full ownership, the company indicated by sending policy documents to account holders this week.

Company sends policy documents to PSN accounts

Automatic emails delivered to PSN users included copies of the platform’s terms of service, code of conduct, end-user license agreement and privacy policy. Among those documents was the software license agreement that clarifies the nature of digital purchases.

The language in the agreement states the software is “licensed, not sold” to the user, meaning buyers receive a personal, limited, non-exclusive and non-transferable license to use the title rather than acquiring outright ownership.

Restrictions tied to digital licenses

The terms spell out limits on how licensed software can be used, restricting actions such as rental, modification or acquisition through channels other than those authorized by Sony. As a result, a digital purchase does not convey the same property rights a physical disc would.

Timing overlaps with controversy over end of physical discs

The policy notices arrived while Sony’s plan to stop producing new physical PlayStation game discs from 2028 faces criticism. Detractors have raised concerns about long-term preservation, the ability to resell games and broader consumer rights in an increasingly digital market.

Critics point out that accounts and digital libraries remain subject to platform rules; for example, current terms do not permit a simple transfer of a PSN account and its associated game library to another person.

Organized protest aims to pressure Sony

Supporters of physical media have organized a coordinated action dubbed “PlayStation Blackout,” scheduled from August 23 to 30. The protest calls on players to refrain from using services, purchasing games or maintaining subscriptions during that week to press Sony to reverse its decision to end new physical releases.

Organizers and participants frame the campaign not only as a preference for boxed copies but as a defense of consumer rights and game preservation amid the shift to a digital-first market.
