A community campaign called “PS5 blackout” that urged players to avoid using PlayStation consoles or stay offline from PlayStation Network (PSN) between August 23 and 30 is being pushed by some organizers to continue for an indefinite period as pressure on Sony over its decision to phase out physical game discs.
Organizers propose open-ended PSN boycott
Does It Play?, a prominent account on X that helped spread the movement, said the one-week interval was only the minimum suggested duration for the protest. The account and other organizers are encouraging participants to remain offline from PSN until Sony reconsiders its stance on physical media.
Some players on social platforms report they have already stopped using PSN or have switched to other consoles, while others plan to observe the original weeklong period. There are no independent figures indicating how many users are actually taking part, making the scale and potential impact of the boycott unclear.
High-profile PS5 releases arrive during boycott window

The expanded protest coincides with key PlayStation release dates. Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled for September 15, and GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19.
If participants keep the boycott in place through those dates, they would also forgo other PS5 releases such as Control Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword and The Blood of Dawnwalker. The campaign is voluntary, and there is no indication that all supporters intend to stay away through those launches.
Sony says it does not expect business impact
The debate intensified after reports about Sony’s shift away from physical games. According to those reports, Sony Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao told investors the company was not seeing business impact from the change.
Lin Tao also acknowledged that players have an emotional attachment to physical media and that the company needs to take that feedback into account. Following the announcement about discontinuing discs, Sony’s shares reportedly rose by about 3.2%.
Community remains divided on effectiveness
Reactions online are mixed: some users pledge to remain offline for weeks or indefinitely, while others doubt whether the number of participants will be sufficient to influence Sony’s strategy. Without a centralized way to register participation, it is not possible to determine how many consoles are idle specifically because of the campaign.
For now, the PS5 blackout mainly represents an organized community mobilization, and its eventual effect on Sony’s business decisions remains uncertain.
