NetherRealm Studios confirmed that Mortal Kombat 11 will receive a free upgrade to the next generation of consoles, with the new version launching on November 17. The studio also outlined how players can obtain the upgrade and what game data will carry over.
How to get the free next-gen update
During a Kombat Kast livestream, the development team explained the paths players can use to move their Mortal Kombat 11 copy to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Owners of the existing PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions will be eligible for the free next‑gen upgrade.
Players who own the base game can alternatively purchase the Kombat Pack 2 add‑on. That pack includes the next‑gen upgrade plus additional content such as skins for Liu Kang, Noob Saibot and Skarlet, and three fighters that are not otherwise unlocked in the base game: Mileena, Rain and Rambo. The Kombat Pack 2 is available for purchase on Microsoft’s store for Xbox and on the PlayStation store for PS5.
What transfers between console generations
NetherRealm said all purchased content and most save data will transfer between generations, provided players sign in with the same account used on the older console. Transferred items include rewards, inventory, Time Crystals, content bought with Time Crystals and character variations.
Progress in the Krypt and the Tower of Time will also carry over. Campaign progress itself will not be transferred, but rewards earned during the story will remain available.
Technical improvements in the next‑gen version
The next‑generation release will include visual and performance upgrades: 4K resolution options, enhanced visuals, cross‑generation multiplayer support and reduced loading times.
Upcoming broadcast and focus
The next Kombat Kast is scheduled to air live on Wednesday, October 28, and will focus on Rambo, the new guest character added to the franchise.
