Early Reviews Say Xbox Series X Heat Is Normal, Not Dangerous

Unrestricted early reviews published after embargo lifts on Thursday, October 15, indicate that the Xbox Series X does produce noticeable heat but not at levels that would make it dangerously hot to touch or suitable for heating a room.

Origin of the overheating claims

Concerns began weeks earlier when a French commentator, Ken Bogard, joked that the console’s heat could warm an apartment, and Jeff Bakalar of Giant Bomb mentioned feeling the console and its expansion memory module get warm while handling them during a podcast recording. Those remarks prompted wider speculation that review units ran excessively hot.

What reviewers actually found

Now that full reviews are available, outlets that spent recent weeks testing the hardware report that the Series X’s temperature behavior is within expectations for a high-performance gaming system. Ars Technica notes the console “produces heat, as expected of any high-performance electronic product,” but not to the exaggerated degree implied by the early comments.

Reviewers highlight that the Series X’s chassis is designed to channel airflow from the bottom to the top, which explains the nonremovable base that keeps the intake unobstructed. Placing a hand near the top exhaust while a next-generation game is running will feel warmth, but that is typical for products of this class.

Power draw and comparisons with previous generation

The Series X can theoretically draw up to 315 watts, but real-world testing shows next-generation games averaged around 190 W. For comparison, the original Xbox One uses about 120 W and the One X around 185 W. Reviewers emphasize that the generation-to-generation difference in power draw is not large.

Consensus from multiple outlets

The Verge reports no significant heat emanating from the console top and found it not hot enough to cause burns during handling, describing the experience as similar to the exhaust on the rear of an Xbox One X or a gaming PC. IGN states the exhaust air is warmer than the previous generation but still far from uncomfortable, even after long play sessions.

Placement and ventilation advice

Both The Verge and GamesRadar agree on practical guidance: place the Series X in a well-ventilated spot to ensure proper airflow. Reviewers warn against keeping the console inside a cramped shelf or an enclosed rack, where recirculation of warm air could raise internal temperatures and risk overheating.
