Microsoft ends Copilot for Xbox amid internal restructure

Microsoft announced on Tuesday, Oct. 5, that it is ending Copilot for Xbox, discontinuing the mobile version and stopping development for consoles, the company’s Xbox division CEO Asha Sharma said. The move is part of a broader internal reorganization of the platform team.

Leadership change and new priorities at Xbox

The decision follows a series of changes since Sharma took charge of Xbox in February, when she replaced Phil Spencer. Since then, Sharma has reshaped the division’s structure and shifted priorities within the team.

As part of the reorganization, executives from Microsoft’s CoreAI team—where Sharma previously worked—have joined the Xbox division. Sharma said the goal of the change is to accelerate development and improve relationships with both players and game developers.

In a post on X, Sharma wrote that Xbox must “move faster, deepen the connection with the community and address friction for both players and developers.”

Copilot removed from Xbox roadmap

Under the new direction, Microsoft will discontinue initiatives that do not align with the revised strategy, including Copilot for gaming. Sharma stated, “We will begin winding down Copilot on mobile and stop development of Copilot on console.”

This reverses previous plans. Last year Microsoft had presented Copilot for gaming as a significant initiative, and in March the company said the tool would arrive on current-generation consoles later this year. That implementation will no longer proceed under the updated roadmap.

Team changes to support the new strategy

Sharma also highlighted shifts in team leadership tied to the reorganization. She said some professionals who helped build the platform were promoted, while new leaders were brought in to drive the revised strategy.

What the announcement means

The announcement stops active development of console Copilot and initiates the shutdown of the mobile Copilot experience for Xbox. No further details were provided about timing, transition plans for existing users, or alternative tools to replace Copilot within Xbox’s ecosystem.
