Files associated with the controversial Hot Coffee mini-game from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas have been discovered inside the newly released Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, a dataminer reported, suggesting a recurring headache for the publisher beyond the remaster’s other technical issues.
The Hot Coffee episode originally surfaced in 2004 with the launch of the original GTA: San Andreas. Although the mini-game had been implemented by the developers, it was not enabled in the retail release. Modders later found ways to unlock the content on PC and on PlayStation 2 and Xbox, provoking controversy due to its sexual content in a title rated for players 17 and older.
At the time, the company changed the game’s rating to “Adults Only” for a period, removed the Hot Coffee code from subsequent releases of San Andreas and faced legal challenges. Those disputes concluded in 2009 with a class-action settlement exceeding US$20 million.
According to the dataminer Vadim M., who examined the remaster’s game files, the Definitive Edition includes data tied to Hot Coffee. He noted, however, that the remaster does not appear to contain the semi-nude character models or erotic animations that once made the mini-game playable.
Disabled content but still present
The dataminer indicated he believes parts of the Hot Coffee functionality have been deliberately disabled to prevent activation by players, reducing the chance the mini-game could be made playable again through user actions.
Remaster facing multiple problems
The Hot Coffee-related files are just one of several issues afflicting GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. The PC version was pulled from digital storefronts hours after launch because it included “unintentionally included files,” notably music tracks whose licenses were not renewed for the remaster.
Console players have reported a range of bugs and performance problems, including unstable frame rates. Some users say certain sequences—such as scenes with heavy rain—become nearly unplayable due to performance drops.
Publisher tasks ahead
With the PC edition currently unavailable for sale, the publisher must address the unlicensed music and now also the remnants of the Hot Coffee content. Removing the residual data from the Definitive Edition would prevent a repeat of the mid-2000s controversy unless the company chooses otherwise.
What’s included in the Definitive Edition
GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition bundles three legacy titles: GTA III, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas. The remastered package is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch, with the PC version currently pulled from sale.
