Elder Scrolls VI likely to be an Xbox exclusive

Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s gaming division, suggested in an interview that the next Elder Scrolls entry will likely arrive as an Xbox exclusive, following the approach used for Starfield. He framed the move not as a punishment to other platforms but as a way to deliver a “complete package” for Xbox players.

“For it to be on Xbox, I want us to be able to bring the complete package of what we have. And that would be true when I think about Elder Scrolls VI. That would be true when I think about any of our franchises,” Spencer said in the conversation with GQ.

Timing and development outlook

Despite the exclusivity hint, the game remains a long-term project. Todd Howard, Bethesda’s executive producer, recently indicated that Elder Scrolls VI is being designed to have a lasting impact comparable to Skyrim, which just celebrated its 10th anniversary and continues to perform strongly.

Howard further suggested the title may not arrive until after 2026. He pointed to Starfield’s upcoming release next year and noted Bethesda’s typical development cycles of four to five years as context for the extended timeline.

Microsoft’s studio expansion and strategy

Microsoft gained Bethesda through its acquisition of ZeniMax Media, bringing into its portfolio studios such as Arkane Studios (Dishonored), MachineGames (Wolfenstein), id Software (Doom), and Tango Gameworks (The Evil Within). The deal increased Microsoft’s stable of first-party teams to 23 studios.

Prior to that, in 2018 Microsoft also acquired at least five other developers: Ninja Theory (Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Journey to the West), Compulsion Games (We Happy Few), Playground Games (Fable, Forza), inXile Entertainment (Wasteland, Hunted: The Demon’s Forge) and Obsidian Entertainment (Star Wars: KOTOR 2, Alpha Protocol, Fallout: New Vegas, Dungeon Siege III).

Commercial implications

Industry attention around a potential Xbox-exclusive Elder Scrolls VI centers on how such a release could strengthen Xbox Series S|X’s appeal against PlayStation 5 in hardware sales. The exclusivity model used for Starfield appears to be the template Spencer envisions for future flagship franchises.
