Far Cry 5 free to play Aug. 5–9 on all platforms

Far Cry 5 will be available to play for free from August 5 through August 9, Ubisoft announced, with the trial open across PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and Google Stadia.

The first-person, open-world shooter sends players to the fictional Hope County, Montana, where the objective is to confront and capture a Christian preacher named Joseph Seed.

Players who try the game during the free period should note the trial is temporary: after August 9 the title will not remain in users’ libraries unless they purchase it.

Discount offer after the free trial

Ubisoft said copies of Far Cry 5 will be offered at up to 80% off starting the evening of August 9, when the free-play window ends, allowing players who enjoyed the trial to buy the game at a reduced price through online stores.

Platforms and availability

The free trial covers all major platforms listed by Ubisoft: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Google Stadia. Users should launch the appropriate store or client for their platform during the August 5–9 window to access the trial.

Keep in mind

Progress made during the free trial may require purchase to continue after the period ends; the publisher’s notice indicates the game will not remain in libraries automatically. Players who want to continue playing beyond August 9 must buy the game, potentially taking advantage of the up-to-80% discount available that evening.
