David Wise, the British composer behind several iconic video game soundtracks, is confirmed to appear at Gamescom 2026. He will perform live and hold meet-and-greet sessions on May 1 and May 2 at the Gamescom Latam Journey Stage.
Why David Wise matters to game music
David Wise’s name is most often linked to Donkey Kong Country, the series that marked the peak of his visibility. He composed music for the three Super Nintendo Donkey Kong Country titles and for the three Donkey Kong Land entries on Game Boy and Game Boy Advance during his 24 years at Rare, from 1985 to 2009.
After leaving Rare, Wise later returned to contribute the soundtrack for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, a widely praised title that brought classic 2D Donkey Kong gameplay to the Wii U and later the Nintendo Switch.

Other notable scores across decades
Wise’s career began with projects like Slalom and Wizards & Warriors in the late 1980s, but his broader recognition came in 1991 with Battletoads for the NES. His themes for that franchise were referenced in later entries and even appeared in the 2020 Battletoads release.

He also composed for prominent spin-offs and Nintendo-era projects such as Diddy Kong Racing for the Nintendo 64, and worked on well-known GameCube titles including Super Smash Bros. Melee and Star Fox Adventures.
Following his departure from Rare in 2009, Wise established the David Wise Sound Studio, continuing to write music for games—among them Gimmick! 2 and the previously mentioned Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze.
Gamescom 2026 appearances and panel
At Gamescom 2026, Wise is scheduled to perform live on May 1 and May 2 (Friday and Saturday) on the Gamescom Latam Journey Stage. Each day will also include meet-and-greet opportunities for attendees to meet him and take photos.

On May 1, Wise will participate in a dedicated panel titled “Monkeys, Toads, and Piñatas – The soundtrack of David Wise,” where he will discuss career stories, inspirations, and key works from his catalogue. The live shows and panel are framed as a nostalgic showcase for fans who grew up with his compositions.
