Nintendo sues Palworld maker over alleged patent infringement

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Pocketpair, the developer of Palworld, alleging the game unlawfully copies aspects of Pokémon. The companies are seeking a preliminary injunction and damages, according to their statement.

Allegations followed an internal investigation after Palworld launch

According to the complaint, Nintendo initiated an internal investigation when Palworld launched in January. The suit claims that the game includes elements that infringe multiple patents held by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, prompting the decision to pursue legal action.

Palworld’s rapid success highlighted in filings

The filings note Palworld’s strong commercial performance after release: the game sold more than 5 million copies within three days. Palworld remains available in early access on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One and PC.

Similarities to Pokémon cited

Pocketpair’s title has been described publicly as “Pokémon with guns,” a characterization the complaint uses to underline alleged resemblances between Palworld’s creatures and established Pokémon designs such as Pikachu, as well as other creature concepts that have defined multiple generations of the franchise.

Pocketpair denies knowledge of any patent violations

In its response, Pocketpair said it was unaware of any patents it had violated and that it had not been provided with specific details of the allegations. The developer pledged to investigate the claims internally.

Pocketpair expresses concern for indie development

Pocketpair described it as “really regrettable” that the company must divert significant time from game development to address the legal dispute. The developer also stated it will do its best for fans and to ensure that independent game creators are not discouraged from pursuing their creative ideas.
