4 reasons to choose PC over consoles

PC gaming can provide advantages consoles do not, including configurable graphics, a wider selection of titles, lower barriers to online play, and simpler access to retro games—factors that may make the computer the better choice for some players.

Configurable graphics let you run demanding games

High-fidelity games can strain hardware; Cyberpunk 2077 is an often-cited example. Even players with well-equipped PCs can experience stuttering or freezes when a title is very demanding.

On consoles such as the Nintendo Switch, users cannot tweak machine-specific settings like refresh rates, memory clock speeds, or graphics card options. If a heavy game causes the console to freeze, there may be no way to adjust settings to improve performance.

By contrast, PCs let players modify graphics settings. Lowering visual quality or adjusting other parameters can allow an otherwise unplayable game to run, giving users more control over performance and playability.

Broader game availability and better deals

Many high-profile games are tied to specific platforms—Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo maintain exclusive catalogs. A game released by one of those companies typically won’t appear in the other consoles’ stores, so owners of a Nintendo Switch cannot play titles like The Last of Us if those are exclusive to another platform.

On PC, that restriction does not apply in the same way: regardless of which company published a game, players can often purchase or download the title for their computer. Additionally, PC storefronts and marketplaces frequently offer deeper discounts and more opportunities to use coupons, making it generally easier to find cheaper games than on consoles.

Online multiplayer can be free on PC

Some console games require a paid subscription to enable online multiplayer. For instance, Nintendo Switch users must subscribe to Nintendo Online to play Resident Evil 6 online.

PC players typically need only buy the game itself; as long as they have an internet connection, they can join online matches without an additional platform subscription. This contrasts with similar subscription requirements present on other consoles like PlayStation and Xbox.

Easier access to older and classic games

PCs offer greater flexibility for playing legacy titles regardless of release year or original platform. Console ecosystems often gate classic libraries behind paid subscriptions.

For example, the Nintendo Switch provides classic Mario Bros. titles through Nintendo Online, which requires a subscription. On PC, however, players are more likely to find and run a wide range of retro games without the same subscription constraints.
