Bethesda announced on Thursday, June 6, that Doom Eternal and The Elder Scrolls Online will be released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and owners of the PS4 or Xbox One versions will receive a free upgrade to the next-gen editions.
What Bethesda confirmed
The studio did not provide technical specifics or exact release dates for the next-generation editions. In a brief statement on its social channels, Bethesda said more information will arrive “in the coming weeks or months,” leaving players waiting for further announcements.
Bethesda added it is working hard to ensure the backward-compatibility project meets expectations on both titles, a comment that could hint at development challenges as the studio aligns these releases with the launch windows of the two consoles.
Timing with console launches
Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 are scheduled to launch later this year, and Bethesda’s remarks suggest the studio is coordinating its next-gen releases accordingly. The company emphasized effort toward delivering a satisfactory experience on both platforms but did not detail what improvements or enhancements players should expect.
QuakeCon plans and event presence
QuakeCon, Bethesda’s annual event, will take place August 7–9. The show is expected to include news about new games and possible remasters that have circulated in recent rumors. Bethesda indicated there is a strong chance of new footage and announcements related to the two confirmed next-gen titles during the event.
According to the company’s schedule notes, Doom Eternal will have presentations on August 7 and 9, while The Elder Scrolls Online will appear across all three days of QuakeCon.
Speculation on upgrades and additions
Community discussion has focused on potential technical and graphical upgrades for the cross-generation releases, as cross-gen launches often show differences between console generations. Fans have also speculated that Bethesda might introduce new tools or features intended to extend the games’ longevity, though the studio has not confirmed any such additions.
Release history
Doom Eternal originally launched in March of this year, and The Elder Scrolls Online was first released in April 2014.
