Valve co-founder favors Xbox Series X over PS5

Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve, said he would choose the Xbox Series X over the PlayStation 5 in an interview on the New Zealand talk show The Project NZ, expressing a personal preference for Microsoft’s new console.

The comment came during a discussion about the upcoming generation of consoles and the rivalry between Sony and Microsoft. Newell, whose company is best known for PC-focused work such as the Steam platform, framed his remark as an opinion rather than a definitive judgment.

Newell’s preference and remarks

Asked directly which console he would favor, Newell replied that he would pick the Xbox Series X. He emphasized that Valve concentrates most of its game development on personal computers and said he did not have a firm bet on the outcome of the console race.

When pressed about his reasoning, Newell offered a brief response: “Because yes,” a remark that drew laughter from the show’s hosts. He clarified his statements as inconclusive and presented them as his own view.

Valve’s role in gaming

Valve is the company behind Steam, the world’s largest digital games marketplace, and is a major player in esports and game distribution. The developer and publisher is responsible for franchises such as Left 4 Dead, Half-Life and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Although Valve’s focus has been largely on PC platforms, Newell’s standing in the industry lends attention to his opinions on consoles. The next generation of hardware has yet to launch, but discussions and comparisons between systems are already widespread among fans.
