With next-generation consoles arriving, many players are considering selling their Xbox One or PlayStation 4. Before you do, take these steps to preserve your game progress, transfer data where possible, and wipe personal information from the device.
Decide what to keep: games and compatibility
Most current-generation games are expected to be compatible with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, but the exact processes for using those titles on new hardware are not fully detailed for every case. If you own a compatible external drive, transferring installed games from your Xbox One is recommended: Xbox One titles will run on Series X and S when stored on a supported unit.
The company behind the PlayStation has not clarified whether the PS5 will run PS4 games directly from external storage in every situation, so preparing local copies or backups of your important titles is prudent before selling the console.
Back up save files
Keeping your game progress can prevent having to replay difficult sections after upgrading. On Xbox One, saves can be uploaded to the cloud automatically once the console is connected to Xbox Live, making them accessible on other devices tied to the same account.
Sony has left cross-generation save compatibility largely to individual developers; only some games have confirmed options to carry progress from PS4 to PS5. For PS4 users, cloud backups require an active PS Plus subscription, but manual backups of saved data are also possible and advisable if you plan to sell the machine.

Factory reset to remove personal data
After securing game files and saves, perform a full factory reset to erase accounts and personal information. This operation is irreversible, so confirm all data is backed up before proceeding.
On Xbox One: open Settings, go to System, then choose Reset Console. When prompted, select “Reset and remove everything” to ensure the console is cleared.
On PlayStation 4: open Settings, find Initialization, and choose Restore Default Settings to return the system to factory state.
Clean and organize before sale
Once data and settings are handled, clean the console physically and check that it functions correctly. Dust out air vents, make sure all ports and buttons work, and gather cables and accessories. Neatly wrap cables and include any controllers or original items you plan to sell with the unit.
These final steps help ensure the console is ready for the next owner and can improve your ability to sell it quickly and at a fair price.
