Xbox reportedly pauses new Game Pass deals with indie studios

Microsoft has allegedly paused new contracts for Xbox Game Pass with independent developers and third-party publishers as the company reevaluates the subscription service’s strategy, according to insider reports. The company has not confirmed the claims, which should be considered a rumor.

Where the report originated

The information was shared by insider eXtas1s and reportedly surfaced during First Playable, a game development industry event held in Italy. Attendees said negotiations that were underway to add games to Game Pass were unexpectedly halted.

Alleged scope of the pause

Sources at the event reportedly described three main points: proposals to include new titles in Game Pass were canceled while negotiations were ongoing; new contracts with third-party studios are completely suspended; and the move is being driven by new leadership within the Xbox division who are reorganizing the platform’s strategy.

Possible shift in Game Pass investment approach

If accurate, the reported pause would signal a reassessment of one of Game Pass’s core mechanics: paying for third-party games, often at launch, to appear day one in the catalog. In recent years Microsoft invested hundreds of millions of dollars to secure such agreements, positioning Game Pass as a major industry storefront.

The rumor suggests the review aims to reduce costs and redefine the service’s investment policy.

Implications for independent developers

Independent studios have used Game Pass deals to finance development, frequently receiving upfront payments from Microsoft in exchange for catalog inclusion. A halt to those contracts could force smaller teams to seek alternative funding sources or rely more heavily on post-launch sales revenue.

Microsoft has not commented

Microsoft has not issued any official statement about changes to Xbox Game Pass. Until the company confirms modifications to the service, the reported suspension of new third-party and indie agreements remains unverified.
