8 tips to survive in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Released in March 2025, Assassin’s Creed Shadows places players in a Japan fractured by conflict, where two protagonists—Naoe, a vengeful shinobi, and Yasuke, a warrior from far away—cross paths. Survival in this open-world action game depends on smart choices, character use, and resource management.

Switch between Naoe and Yasuke strategically

Assassin’s Creed Shadows centers on two main characters with complementary strengths. You can’t control both at once, so alternate between them using the inventory screen or the world map for fast travel. Some campaign sections also let you choose which protagonist to play, so pick the one whose skills suit the mission.

Know each protagonist’s strengths

Understanding Naoe and Yasuke helps you decide who to deploy in a given scenario. Naoe excels at stealth: she is agile, able to infiltrate enemy bases, uses a grappling hook for climbing, and her Eagle Vision highlights enemies in red contours. Use her for silent approaches and surveillance.

Yasuke, by contrast, is built for direct combat. He wields heavy weapons such as the kanabo staff to break enemy defenses and relies on a strong guard posture for effective blocking. Choose Yasuke when open confrontation or crowd control is needed.

Prioritize staying undetected

One of the most reliable survival strategies is avoiding detection. Target selection matters—some enemies have high resistance and can become major threats if engaged carelessly. The game offers a Gameplay: Difficulty Tuning option called Guaranteed Assassinations that lets you kill enemies instantly regardless of their level, making stealth kills safer and reducing risk during infiltration.

Build shelters to boost recovery and gains

Constructing shelters provides multiple benefits: increased healing from food, boosted experience points, and passive bonuses. Gather materials like ore and wood during exploration to build and upgrade these structures, which become valuable safe spots in hostile areas.

Recruit wanderers and allied heroes

Throughout the world you can encounter wanderers and heroes who are potential allies. You can call them into fights to use their abilities, providing reinforcement during tough battles and improving your odds of survival when facing overwhelming forces.

Defeat the samurai Daisho to unlock treasure

Removing the elite samurai Daisho, who guards a specific base, unlocks the local treasure chest. That chest may contain powerful rewards—legendary accessories, weapons, and armor—that strengthen your characters and broaden your tactical options.

Upgrade weapons with the blacksmith

Keeping your weapons up to date is essential for handling tougher enemies. Use the blacksmith to upgrade armaments so they remain viable in escalating encounters. Regular improvements ensure you’re prepared for the increasing difficulty of later missions.

Use shrines for temporary boosts

Praying at shrines grants temporary bonuses such as adrenaline recharge, increased attack, higher critical-hit chance, and other attribute boosts. These buffs can turn difficult encounters into manageable fights and are useful before key missions or boss fights.
