Microsoft is reportedly preparing to launch a dedicated game streaming device for Xbox within the next 12 months, according to a new report citing people familiar with the company’s plans. The hardware would act like a “Roku-like” plug-in to stream Xbox games from the cloud.
The alleged device would enable users to play titles available through Xbox Cloud Gaming, including Game Pass cloud-enabled games, as well as separate cloud-streamed titles such as Fortnite. Sources also claim the stick would support streaming services for movies and TV in addition to gaming.

History of Microsoft’s streaming ambitions
Microsoft has discussed its own streaming hardware and Smart TV apps for several years. In 2020, Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Gaming, floated the idea of streaming sticks tied to what was then called xCloud. More recently, Liz Hamren, CVP of Xbox platform and gaming experience, said the company is interested in “extending the Xbox experience to more devices,” including Smart TVs.
Previous efforts and collaborations
This is not the first report about an Xbox TV app. In November 2021, Spencer confirmed the team was working with television manufacturers to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming directly to large screens. Despite these ongoing discussions and the current report, Microsoft has not issued an official statement about the alleged streaming stick.
What’s next
The report frames the device as arriving within the next 12 months, but it relies on unnamed people familiar with internal plans. The timing, features and official confirmation remain pending until Microsoft comments publicly.
