Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s gaming division, confirmed the company is developing a portable version of the Xbox but said the device is still years from release.
“The expectation is that we will do something,” Spencer told Bloomberg, while emphasizing there is nothing concrete yet. He added that work on hardware is a long-term effort: “I love creating devices. I believe our team can do very innovative work, but we want to be informed as we learn and understand what is happening right now.”

Past comments and market context
Rumors of an Xbox handheld have circulated for some time and Spencer’s remarks echo his earlier comments. In February 2024 he described himself as “a big fan of portables” and has praised devices such as Lenovo’s Legion Go, a handheld that targets cloud gaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming.
How Microsoft might approach a portable Xbox
Spencer’s comments come as Microsoft shifts marketing to highlight the range of ways to play via Xbox Cloud Gaming, from PCs and consoles to smartphones and tablets. That strategy frames a portable Xbox as another access point to the company’s ecosystem rather than necessarily a standalone platform.
Industry speculation suggests Microsoft’s handheld is unlikely to mimic a console that requires exclusive titles—like the Nintendo Switch. Instead, the company could follow models used by Lenovo, Asus or Valve: powerful portable PCs that run existing libraries from Steam or Windows. That approach would enable players to use games they already own rather than repurchase titles for a new, exclusive platform.
Implications for Microsoft’s stores and libraries
If Microsoft opts for a PC-compatible handheld, it could strengthen the appeal of the Microsoft Store and Windows gaming ecosystem by offering a device that supports existing libraries. Such a device would target players who have built extensive PC collections and prefer compatibility over a closed, platform-specific store.
For now, Spencer’s statement confirms only intent and long-term interest; timing, technical details and the final product concept remain unannounced.
