Microsoft announced the Xbox Games with Gold lineup for May 2021, offering four titles free for Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and, via backward compatibility, Xbox 360. The selection emphasizes role-playing and strategy games: Armello, Dungeons 3, LEGO Batman and Tropico 4.
Which games and when they’re free
Armello and Dungeons 3 are the headline offerings for Xbox One and Series X/S subscribers, while LEGO Batman and Tropico 4 will be available through backward compatibility. Each game is available for a limited window during May and early June:
- LEGO Batman: free from May 1 to May 15, 2021.
- Armello: free from May 1 to May 31, 2021.
- Tropico 4: free from May 16 to May 31, 2021.
- Dungeons 3: free from May 16, 2021 through June 15, 2021.
Gamerscore available
According to Microsoft, the four titles together offer up to 4,000 Gamerscore points that players can earn through achievements on Xbox’s system.
Short descriptions of the free games
Armello
Armello is described as a dark fairy-tale board game brought to life, combining deep card-game tactics with table-top strategy in a character-driven RPG. Players explore the realm, cast spells, battle monsters and compete to become the next King or Queen of Armello.
Dungeons 3
Dungeons 3 casts players as the Dungeon Lord in a real-time strategy dungeon-building game. Command forces led by your lieutenant Thalya, recruit orcs, succubi, zombies and other minions, and use devious tactics to overthrow the heroes of the overworld.
LEGO Batman
In LEGO Batman, players take on the role of the Caped Crusader (and partner Robin) to build, drive, swing and fight through Gotham. The game also lets players control villains in the story mode to carry out their schemes to dominate the city.
Tropico 4
As El Presidente in Tropico 4, players govern a small island nation: seeking popular support, negotiating with world powers and managing natural disasters. The game challenges players’ political instincts and highlights competing agendas among allies and foes.
Previous month’s free titles still available
Microsoft noted that some April Games with Gold titles remain available for download: Vikings: Wolves of Midgard and Darksiders are free until April 30, 2021, while Truck Racing Championship is free through May 15, 2021.
