The Nintendo Switch 2 is selling rapidly, but several owners in the United States have reported encountering a severe penalty from the company: consoles that detect certain third‑party “flash” cartridges show error code 2134-4508 and are blocked from online services.
What triggers error 2134-4508
Players including content creator Scattered Brain reported seeing an error screen when launching games on their Switch 2. Multiple accounts indicate the consoles detected a device referred to as a “flash Mig.”
Flash Mig cartridges are hardware devices that let users create copies of game cartridges — a form of local backup — but they are widely used to run pirated games. According to user reports, when the Switch 2 detects a Mig, the system displays the 2134-4508 error code.
Consequences: permanent offline status
The result of that detection is a loss of internet access on the affected console. Nintendo’s response, as described by users, appears to be permanent: consoles remain able to play games locally but cannot access online features.
Loss of connectivity blocks multiplayer functionality and prevents use of the eShop. It also prevents account operations that require online access, such as unlinking an account from the device.

Context: Nintendo’s anti‑piracy posture
Such a strict response aligns with Nintendo’s long history of opposing piracy and emulation. The company has previously taken legal action in multiple jurisdictions and has publicly stated its position on emulators and copyright protection.
Earlier this year, Nintendo attorney Koji Nishiura said at an event that, while an emulator itself may not necessarily be illegal, its use can violate copyright protections — a stance the company has enforced through lawsuits and other measures.

What owners should know
Owners who use or consider using flash cartridges should be aware that detection by the Switch 2 can result in permanent loss of online access, even if local gameplay remains functional. Those who wish to retain multiplayer, eShop access and account control need to avoid using devices that the console flags as unauthorized.
