Sony plans to keep its next generation of major single-player games exclusive to the PlayStation ecosystem, company leaders reportedly told staff, citing financial returns, brand positioning and the desire to strengthen the platform.
PlayStation exclusives remain core to the brand
According to accounts of comments attributed to Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, the company views narrative-driven, single-player franchises as central to PlayStation’s identity. Longstanding series such as God of War, The Last of Us, Spider-Man and Horizon are highlighted as key differentiators compared with competitors.
Sony intends to keep its flagship narrative games closely associated with PlayStation to reinforce the console’s value proposition for consumers and to preserve the exclusivity of its intellectual properties.
PC ports underperformed expectations
The reported shift reverses several years in which Sony began releasing some exclusives on PC. Company evaluations found that certain PC adaptations did not generate sufficient financial returns to justify continued or simultaneous investments in porting around launch windows.
While some titles found audiences on PC, the results were said to be below what Sony expected relative to the impact those exclusives have within the PlayStation ecosystem.
Exclusives expected to support PS5 and future PS6 sales

Maintaining major franchises as console exclusives is also being framed as a way to encourage hardware purchases. The strategy is intended to bolster demand for the current PS5 and to provide a strong lineup heading into the PS6 generation.
Titles mentioned as potential drivers include Marvel’s Wolverine, God of War Laufey, the reported Trilogy Remake and Intergalactic, which could serve as compelling reasons for players to buy or upgrade PlayStation hardware.
Narrative games as a strategic differentiator
Even as the games industry increasingly favors multiplatform releases and online services, Sony plans to emphasize cinematic, single-player experiences as a pillar of its strategy. The company believes these games help distinguish the PlayStation brand and deepen ties between its most valuable franchises and the platform where they originated.
If this approach holds, Sony expects that narrative exclusives will continue to be one of the ecosystem’s main competitive advantages in the coming years.
