Rockstar Games will offer a free upgrade for Grand Theft Auto V owners on June 18, allowing players who have older editions to move to the latest versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC without additional cost.
Who qualifies for the free upgrade
According to Rockstar, owners of GTA V for PlayStation 4 and the digital edition on Xbox One are eligible to upgrade at no charge to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.
PC players who already have earlier releases of the game can also migrate to the Enhanced edition for computers without paying, as specified by the company.
Rockstar says players will be able to transfer both single-player campaign progress and GTA Online data to the new versions.
What the upgraded versions add
The next-generation releases include several technical and visual improvements over the original editions. Key upgrades highlighted are better visual fidelity, improved performance, shorter load times and faster character switching.
For PC, the Enhanced edition adds advanced graphical features. Rockstar calls out technologies such as ray tracing, enhanced global illumination and ray-traced ambient occlusion as part of the PC improvements.
Implications for older platforms and GTA Online
The free upgrade has prompted discussion about the future of GTA Online support on legacy consoles. Rockstar previously ended GTA Online support for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2021, and some community members see this upgrade as a possible step toward phasing out older platform support.
Rockstar has not announced any plans to discontinue services on current older-generation platforms.
Relation to Grand Theft Auto VI
The news arrives while attention remains focused on Grand Theft Auto VI. The publisher Take-Two has the game’s release scheduled for November 19, 2026, and said it will ramp up marketing during the North American summer.
That build-up has increased speculation that a third trailer for GTA 6 could appear in the coming weeks and deliver further details about the forthcoming title.
