Sony is reportedly developing the PlayStation 6 with the goal of delivering greater raw power than the next-generation Xbox, according to a recent leak cited by ComicBook.
The leak, shared by YouTuber Red Gaming Tech, says the PS6 will use AMD technology and emphasize advanced graphics and compute capabilities, including ray tracing, path tracing, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI). Because the project remains in early stages, detailed specifications and final decisions have not been provided.
Timeline and development status
Leaks and projections (not officially confirmed by Sony) indicate the PlayStation 6 could arrive around 2028. The report stresses, however, that the console’s design and feature set are still under active development and subject to change.
What Sony is doing while preparing the next generation
While work continues on a next-generation PlayStation, Sony is also finalizing the rollout of a new PlayStation 5 Slim model. The company expects the refreshed PS5 to boost overall PlayStation 5 sales.
PS5 market performance and context
Sony’s latest financial update, released in December 2023, reported global PlayStation 5 sales exceeding 50 million units. The console experienced its strongest Black Friday period since launch in late 2020.
Market research from Ampere Analysis cited in the source shows a 65% increase in PlayStation 5 sales this year, reaching 22.5 million units. In the same period, Nintendo Switch and Xbox sales reportedly fell by 18% and 15%, respectively. Analysts attribute part of the PS5’s improved figures to better availability after prior supply-chain constraints limited stock on store shelves.
