Roblox announced on Monday, June 13, that it will roll out age-based account types for users under 16, introducing Roblox Kids for ages 5 to 8 and Roblox Select for ages 9 to 15. The change will automatically adjust content access, communication features, and parental controls according to verified age; users 16 and older will retain the platform’s standard experience.

Centralized parental controls and age verification
The update consolidates existing measures—age verification, content ratings, continuous moderation and parental controls—into a unified structure for younger users. Parents and guardians gain additional tools to manage their children’s experience.
Among the expanded features, adults will be able to block specific games individually, manage chat settings, and approve access to titles that would otherwise be unavailable to the child’s default account. The system also provides visibility into which games children play most and who they interact with, and it lets caregivers set time and spending limits on the platform.
How each account tier works
Accounts are assigned automatically based on verified age, either by Roblox’s system or by a responsible adult, and each tier uses dynamically curated game catalogs.
Roblox Kids, for ages 5 to 8, restricts access to games rated “Minimal” or “Mild,” all of which undergo a selection process. In this tier, all forms of communication are disabled by default, and the interface includes a distinct visual identifier to make the account type obvious.
Roblox Select, for ages 9 to 15, permits games rated up to “Moderate,” which are also chosen using additional criteria. Communication settings remain unchanged for this group, and the interface presents a different visual treatment from the Kids tier.
The system includes automatic progression: users move from Roblox Kids to Roblox Select upon turning 9, and from Select to the standard account at 16.

Game selection, ratings and moderation
For users under 16, Roblox will implement an ongoing game selection process that incorporates developer verification, analysis of older users’ behavior, and monitoring of reports. Titles are evaluated for maturity of content and removed if they include sensitive themes or are deemed unsuitable for younger audiences.
Roblox said it plans to migrate later this year to the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) system to standardize age ratings across regions and help families identify appropriate content.
Accounts that do not complete age verification will face limited access: they will be restricted to lower-rated games and communication features, and will be automatically placed into the appropriate account tier once verification is completed.
