Turn on a PlayStation 5. If you updated the system starting Tuesday, November 3, you’ll be greeted by a new, cinematic startup intro created to mark PlayStation’s 30th anniversary. Sony also added a set of commemorative themes users can apply from the console settings.
New anniversary intro and era‑themed PS5 themes
After installing the anniversary update, the PS5 will play what Sony calls its most powerful console intro to date on the next boot. Once the intro has played, owners can go to “Settings” and select special 30th‑anniversary themes.
The theme collection includes looks inspired by the PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 generations, plus a general 30th‑anniversary theme. Each option pairs a visual style with sound effects evocative of the generation it honors.

These themes aim to deliver a nostalgic experience for fans of particular PlayStation eras, but users who prefer a standard interface can disable them in settings.
Be aware that both the anniversary intro and the themed options are available only for a limited time. Sony has not announced when the themes will be removed, so they could remain available for days or months.
Anniversary video and store promotion
Sony published a video thanking players for their support over 30 years and launched an anniversary sale that runs through December 20. The PlayStation Store lists the discounted games included in that promotion.
PlayStation Portal gets cloud gaming in beta
Sony released a beta update for the PlayStation Portal that adds cloud gaming support. With the update, users can stream games to the Portal without needing a linked PS5, addressing a major limitation of the device.

The cloud catalog available through the beta includes more than 120 titles, such as Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider‑Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. However, the update carries a disappointing caveat, which Sony has not fully resolved in this beta release.
