Microsoft partners with InWorld AI to add generative AI to Xbox games

Microsoft announced a partnership with InWorld AI this week to bring generative artificial intelligence tools to Xbox game development, enabling studios to create characters, narratives and missions with AI assistance.

What the partnership enables

Under the agreement, Xbox developers will be able to use InWorld AI’s technology to generate scripts, dialogue and mission content. Microsoft said the collaboration allows teams to build “characters and cutting-edge cloud AI solutions” powered by InWorld AI’s systems, according to Haiyan Zhang, general manager for gaming AI at Xbox.

How the technology works in games

InWorld AI’s approach produces non-player characters (NPCs) that respond in natural ways similar to generative chatbots such as ChatGPT or Bing Chat. The tools can generate dynamic stories, missions and conversational lines, potentially enabling more complex interactions and narrative variability within games.

Optional adoption by studios

The integration will be offered as an optional resource for Microsoft’s game development teams. Each subsidiary or studio within the company can decide whether to adopt the InWorld AI tools and, if so, to what extent they will use generative AI in their titles.

Industry perspective

InWorld AI’s CEO, Ily Genfenbeyn, emphasized that AI already plays multiple roles in game development—from enemy behavior to procedural generation—and that large language models and generative AI open new opportunities for storytelling and character engagement in games.
