Grand Theft Auto VI will not include real‑money microtransactions at launch, and Rockstar North says it did not use generative artificial intelligence during the game’s development, according to reports following recent visits by journalists to the studio in Scotland.
Studio leaders directly addressed microtransactions and AI use
Reporters Andy Cortez and Greg Miller of Kinda Funny relayed comments from Rob Nelson, co‑head of Rockstar North, who reportedly answered “no” when asked whether the game would ship with microtransactions or whether generative AI had been employed in its production.
Rockstar emphasizes human-driven production and animation volume
Separately, a report at The New York Times echoed Rockstar’s emphasis on human-led work on GTA 6. The company highlighted the scale of handcrafted content, noting the title includes more than 600,000 animations.
For context, Rockstar said Grand Theft Auto V contained roughly 55,000 animations, while Red Dead Redemption 2 had about 300,000.

What the microtransaction statement covers
The statement about microtransactions refers specifically to the game’s launch state. It does not confirm or rule out any future plans Rockstar might adopt for post‑launch content, services or monetization.
The attention on the issue follows the long history of GTA Online, which offers Shark Cards to allow purchases of in‑game currency with real money.
Release date and platforms
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
