GoldenEye 007 online multiplayer excluded from Xbox

The remastered GoldenEye 007 will be released for Nintendo Switch and added to Xbox Game Pass, but Microsoft confirmed on Tuesday that the game’s online multiplayer will be exclusive to the Switch version.

Microsoft told VGC and The Verge it “does not have plans to include GoldenEye 007’s online multiplayer on Xbox Game Pass.” The clarification followed questions raised after Nintendo’s Direct presentation on Tuesday, June 13.

Xbox version includes local multiplayer only

According to Microsoft’s statement, the Xbox edition of GoldenEye 007 will offer a local multiplayer mode supporting up to four players, mirroring the split-screen experience familiar from the original 1990s release.

Technical details and developer notes

Rare Limited, the studio behind the original GoldenEye and currently owned by Microsoft, said the game was “faithfully rebuilt for Xbox consoles” compared with the Nintendo 64 version. The remaster will include achievements, 4K resolution support and a smoother frame rate.

Availability and distribution

Microsoft has not announced a release date for GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Game Pass, nor confirmed whether the remastered title will be available for separate purchase outside the service. Owners of the Rare Replay classic games bundle will receive the title at no additional cost.

Switch version and online play

The Nintendo Switch release will be available through Nintendo Switch Online and will include online multiplayer along with other updates. GoldenEye 007 was a major success during the Nintendo 64 era and its multiplayer remains a notable feature for many players.
