Elden Ring Nightreign, a standalone spin-off from FromSoftware, launched on May 30, 2025. The game departs from the solitary, contemplative tone of the original Elden Ring and instead delivers a cooperative, roguelike experience built around intense three-day sessions in a changing world called Limveld.
What Nightreign is and where to play
Developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, Nightreign is an action RPG with roguelike elements. It is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Nightreign is a fully independent title: you do not need the original Elden Ring to play. Sessions support up to three players in cooperative play but can also be undertaken solo. The game’s setting, Limveld, is a procedural alternate version of Limgrave designed to change between runs while keeping a consistent base map.
Session structure and core loop
Games are organized into runs that simulate three in-game days, each day lasting roughly 15 minutes. Players explore, fight enemies and prepare for a boss encounter at the end of each day. Difficulty escalates nightly, culminating in a significant boss fight on the third day.
This compact cycle draws inspiration from speedrun culture, rewarding optimization and strategic decision-making across short, replayable runs.
Limveld, the Night Tide, and dynamic hazards
Limveld contains a stable overarching map with dynamic elements that shift each session. A central mechanic called the “Night Tide” shrinks the playable area over time—similar to battle royale games—forcing movement and tactical adaptation.
Environmental modifiers such as swamps or volcanoes can appear during a run, changing enemy types and traversal options and altering the challenges teams face.

Combat, revival and progression systems
Combat emphasizes teamwork and continuous action. A notable revival mechanic removes a discrete revive button: teammates reanimate downed players by attacking them, integrating revival into combat flow and strategy.
Progression includes Relics and Marks. Relics grant permanent improvements to character abilities, while Marks operate as a currency to obtain relics and cosmetic items at the Roundtable Hold hub.
Exploration tools and buffs
Nightreign adds traversal and exploration features to complement its condensed sessions:
- Falcon flight system: players can use falcons to travel fixed aerial routes for faster cross-map movement.
- Buff points: specific map locations restore full HP, boost rune acquisition temporarily or grant unique spells.
- Skill tree: while equipment remains central to progression, a skill tree allows further customization of each class’ playstyle.

Sales, reception and post-launch plans
On its first day, Elden Ring Nightreign sold over 2 million copies. The game has received positive reviews overall, though players have reported issues with matchmaking, the absence of options for two-player sessions, and difficulties leaving online sessions.
FromSoftware issued Patch 1.01.1 to address bugs and improve stability. The developer has announced plans for additional content in 2025, including new characters and bosses.
