Doom Eternal will join Xbox Game Pass for consoles on October 1, Microsoft announced, and the game will also be added to PC Game Pass later this year, though no specific PC release date was given.
The announcement follows Microsoft’s acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the parent company of studios including Bethesda and id Software. In a blog post, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, said the company will add Bethesda’s iconic franchises to Xbox Game Pass for both console and PC, and that future releases from those studios will arrive on the subscription service on day one.
Expansion due later in October
Doom Eternal already has an expansion scheduled for October 20 titled The Ancient Gods – Part One. Microsoft has not clarified whether that expansion will be available through Game Pass immediately on release.
Classic Doom and Doom II receive major updates
Separately, Doom and Doom II received a substantial update after 27 years, introducing several modern features. The classics now offer widescreen 16:9 support, an optional overlay aiming reticle, and assisted aiming via motion controls on Nintendo Switch and platforms using a DualShock 4 controller.
The update also added optimizations and new tools aimed at speedrunners, including a high-precision timer near the minimap with millisecond accuracy.
Id Software noted that the widened field of view reveals more image on the sides rather than cropping the top and bottom, and that many add-ons have been updated to support widescreen; users are advised to download the latest add-on list to see changes.
Gyro Aim was added for PC, Switch and PS4 and is enabled by default. The feature lets players look left and right by rotating the controller; it can be configured to use yaw or pitch, or turned off entirely, with a separate sensitivity slider.
