Bethesda describes Starfield as “NASA meets Indiana Jones

Bethesda Game Studios said its upcoming science-fiction role-playing game Starfield will arrive on November 11, 2022, offering a spacefaring experience the studio likens to a mix of NASA-style exploration and pulpy adventure.

Studio frames Starfield as space exploration with adventure

In interviews around the game’s debut trailer, Bethesda executives used familiar comparisons to sketch the tone and scope of Starfield. Todd Howard, director at Bethesda, described the project as “NASA meets Indiana Jones and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” and said the game will feel like “Skyrim in space” in terms of its structure.

Ashley Cheng, an executive at the studio, compared the game to the Han Solo archetype, inviting players to “get into a ship, explore the galaxy, do fun stuff,” according to comments published in The Washington Post.

Premise and player role

Starfield places players as new recruits of Constellation, a group of space explorers searching for answers to major cosmic mysteries. The story is set roughly 300 years in the future.

Howard explained that Constellation is the primary faction players will join but emphasized that many factions populate the game world. He said the game’s structure allows players to define who they want to be and to join different factions to carve their own path.

Progression and narrative approach

Bethesda indicated that characters’ backgrounds will influence how the story unfolds. The studio intends to present a central narrative while also offering numerous additional stories and role-playing options so players can express their chosen identity within the Starfield universe.
