Xbox released its first exclusive title of 2022 in July: As Dusk Falls, which arrived on Xbox Game Pass on its launch day.
Game joins Game Pass at release
Microsoft included As Dusk Falls on the roster of games added to Xbox Game Pass in the second half of July. Developed by Interior Night and published by Xbox Game Studios, As Dusk Falls became available to Game Pass subscribers the same day it launched, alongside Watch Dogs 2 and Ashes Of The Singularity: Escalation.
First day-one exclusive since Halo Infinite
As Dusk Falls is the first Xbox exclusive to hit Game Pass on launch day in 2022, following Halo Infinite, which was added to the service in December of the previous year. Halo Infinite arrived on Game Pass a month after Forza Horizon 5. The gap between day-one exclusives this year may reflect Microsoft’s expectation that Halo Infinite would occupy players for an extended period.
Single-player story and social multiplayer
The title features a single-player mode, but its multiplayer component has drawn particular attention. Up to eight players can participate simultaneously using only their smartphones.
Multiplayer participants influence the narrative by voting on story decisions. Each player has a limited number of opportunities to override the group vote and force their chosen outcome, introducing strategic social interaction into the branching narrative.
Console services align on day-one releases
Console platforms appear to be following a similar approach to day-one releases in their subscription services. PlayStation also launched an exclusive this week—Stray—which was made available at launch for PS Plus subscribers on the Extra and Deluxe plans.
As Dusk Falls is now available for Xbox Game Pass subscribers.
