On Tuesday, Oct. 10, the new Xbox Series X and S consoles reached customers, but many buyers were unable to sign in and start playing because Xbox Live suffered intermittent login outages throughout the afternoon.
Microsoft attributes issues to surge in new consoles
Microsoft’s support channels reported an instability in Xbox Live beginning at 3:18 p.m. Brasília time, warning users of login difficulties likely caused by a surge of newly activated consoles downloading updates and games simultaneously. The company first indicated the issue was resolved at 4:49 p.m.
Repeated interruptions and timeline
After the initial fix, Microsoft confirmed another period of login problems at 6:40 p.m., which was reportedly resolved at 7:05 p.m. The company’s status updates framed the outages as intermittent and tied to the launch-day traffic patterns.
Impact on digital-only Xbox Series S owners
For Series S owners, the outage had particular consequences because the model lacks a disc drive and requires downloads to install games. As noted in the report, inability to access Xbox Live prevents players from obtaining digital titles and updates, effectively blocking play on brand-new hardware until services are restored.
Other game services affected on the same day
The consoles’ launch coincided with separate stability events for popular online games. Destiny 2 underwent server maintenance that was expected to finish around 2:00 p.m. Brasília time but was extended by four hours, completing only at 6:00 p.m.
Additionally, The Division 2 experienced a planned maintenance window but returned within the announced schedule, with services restored at 7:50 a.m. Brasília time.
