How to Enable and Customize Subtitles on Disney+

Most Disney+ titles include subtitles and closed captions, and you can enable them on any device that supports the app. While Disney+ currently offers audio and subtitle tracks in up to 16 languages, available options may vary by title and will expand as the service reaches more countries.

How to turn on subtitles during playback

To activate subtitles while watching, open the video player and click the keyboard icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. Then choose the subtitle language you want. On most devices the menu will close automatically after selection; in web browsers you may need to close it manually.

Your language and subtitle preferences are saved to your profile on that device, but note that the audio and subtitle options offered depend on the specific title you are watching. The Roku platform is an exception: press the “*” button on the Roku remote to open the audio menu.

Closed caption accessibility settings by platform

Closed captions (for viewers with hearing impairments) are available on Disney+, but enabling them follows different steps on each platform. Use the system-level accessibility settings on your device as listed below.

  • iOS: go to Settings > General > Accessibility.
  • Android: open Accessibility settings and go to Hearing enhancements.
  • Xbox: open the Settings app, select Ease of Access, then Closed Caption.
  • PlayStation: open Settings, choose Accessibility, then Closed Caption.

How to customize subtitle appearance

Disney+ lets you change the look and style of subtitles and closed captions, but the steps differ by device. Customizations you make on a device apply to all profiles on that device, but they do not sync across other devices using the same profiles. You must set preferences on each device you use.
