Respawn Entertainment has confirmed that Apex Legends will receive a next‑generation update for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, though the studio did not provide a release date for the upgrade.
What the update aims to deliver
The developer said the next‑gen version will take advantage of the increased power in the new consoles. Planned improvements include higher resolution and better overall performance, with a potential 120 frames per second mode under consideration, but no timeline was specified.
Background and platform history
Apex Legends launched in February 2019 as a free‑to‑play battle royale, initially released for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and published by EA. The announcement about a next‑gen update came from members of the Apex Legends team during a Reddit question‑and‑answer session.
Cross‑progression target pushed to 2022
Respawn also noted plans to implement cross‑progression in 2022. The team said they are facing some challenges with this feature and did not offer further details or a firm schedule.

Staff change after past posts surface
In a separate development, Respawn’s lead designer on Apex Legends, Daniel Klein, was fired after racist messages he wrote in a 2007 blog were discovered. Klein apologized on Twitter for the racist and sexist content he posted when he was younger, taking full responsibility and saying he feels “ashamed, sad and angry” at his younger self. He added, “I hope it is obvious that I no longer believe these things,” in posts published on Tuesday, the 10th.
