A codename discovered in Xbox’s internal database has sparked speculation that Age of Empires IV could be under development or testing for Xbox consoles.
Codename “Cardinal” appears in Xbox database
A Twitter account that analyzes Xbox database entries, @ALumia_Italia, reported the addition of a product listed under the codename “Cardinal.” The account concluded that this codename likely refers to Age of Empires IV, implying Relic Entertainment might be working on an Xbox version of the medieval real-time strategy title.
Testing does not equal confirmed release
Even if “Cardinal” is indeed linked to Age of Empires IV, the presence of a codename in Xbox records does not necessarily indicate an imminent public launch. The listing could reflect internal testing or a prototype build without firm plans for release.
Precedent of PC titles appearing on Xbox
There are precedents for PC-only franchises or titles later arriving on Xbox. Microsoft Flight Simulator launched on Xbox Series X|S in 2021 after being a PC title, though it did not come to Xbox One. The same selective-console approach could apply to any potential Age of Empires IV release, depending on technical or commercial decisions.
