Xbox CEO praises scale of The Elder Scrolls VI after studio demo

Xbox leadership attended a visit to Bethesda’s Rockville, Maryland office on Tuesday, August 11, where Asha Sharma, CEO of Xbox, said she observed an internal demonstration of The Elder Scrolls VI and praised the project’s scope and story.

Internal playable demo observed

In a social media post, Sharma said she watched a “live playthrough” of The Elder Scrolls VI, indicating that a playable build or portion of the RPG was presented during the visit. She described the game’s “scale and grandness” as “incredible” and called the story “even bigger.”

The statement did not specify the development stage of the project, which parts were shown, or whether Sharma personally played the build or watched someone else during the demonstration. Still, her comments suggest Bethesda has at least a functional version of some sections of the game.

Asterisks in post draw attention

Sharma used a sequence of eight asterisks in her post that fans quickly noticed and interpreted as a possible obscured subtitle for The Elder Scrolls VI. Bethesda has not announced an official subtitle, and since the franchise’s teaser at E3 2018 the project has been publicly referred to simply as The Elder Scrolls VI.

Project history and current secrecy

The Elder Scrolls VI was first teased in 2018 with a brief landscape shot and the franchise logo. Since then, Bethesda has prioritized other projects, notably Starfield, and details about the next Elder Scrolls chapter have remained limited. No official release date, platform list, or comprehensive gameplay and story details have been provided.

Visit occurred amid protests over layoffs

The visit coincided with protests outside Bethesda’s building by unionized employees who were demonstrating against recent layoffs at Xbox-related studios. Demonstrators displayed “Scabby,” a large inflatable rat commonly used in U.S. labor actions.

Reports say about 1,600 employees were affected by recent cuts across Xbox studios. Additional protests organized with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) are scheduled for August 18 in multiple U.S. and Canadian cities. Workers are calling for fairer contracts and protections against future layoffs.

Bethesda says development will continue

Bethesda previously stated that planning for The Elder Scrolls VI has not been changed by the restructuring at Xbox. Nonetheless, some studio employees have expressed concern about how the cuts might affect production on large-scale games.

The demo seen by Sharma provides a fresh indication that development is progressing, but a public, detailed presentation for players has not yet been announced.
