Xbox Series X|S adds updates while in energy-saving mode

Microsoft announced that Xbox Series X and S consoles will now download system updates while in the devices’ energy-saving mode, significantly lowering power consumption when the consoles are idle.

What changes and why it matters

Previously, automatic updates were available only when consoles used the Instant-On power mode. With the recent change — which also made energy-saving mode the default setting on new consoles — the systems will consume roughly 20 times less energy when no update is actively running.

How to enable energy-saving mode

To switch to energy-saving mode, go to Settings, select “Power mode & startup” and choose “Energy-saving.”

Related console updates

Microsoft has also rolled out adjustments to Quick Resume, described by the company as one of the largest updates for the consoles to date.

Company climate commitments

Two years ago Microsoft publicly committed to becoming carbon negative by 2030, aiming to remove more carbon from the environment than it emits. In its most recent report, the company said it reduced its carbon emissions by 6% last year, equivalent to 730,000 tonnes.

Broader industry context

Other major technology and automotive companies have also announced sustainability targets. The report notes commitments from Tencent in gaming and several automakers — Jaguar, Ford, GM, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and BYD — to reach net-zero emissions by 2040.
