Xbox controller that smells like pizza debuts for TMNT film

Microsoft developed an Xbox controller that emits a pizza scent as part of a marketing tie-in with Paramount’s upcoming film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, due in August 2023. The device includes a fragrance diffuser shaped like a pizza slice on the back of the controller.

Design and variations

Described by Microsoft as the “first pizza-scented controller in the world,” the accessory was built in four distinct variations. Each version reflects one of the four Turtles — Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo — matching their signature colors, weapons and personalities.

How to obtain one

The controllers will not be available for purchase; Microsoft is distributing them through a giveaway. To enter, participants must follow Xbox Game Pass on Twitter and retweet the official giveaway post. Entries are accepted through August 13.

Microsoft will showcase the scented controllers on August 2 at the Xbox Gaming Lounge inside the Microsoft Experience Center in New York. Attendees at the event will be able to try the controllers and experience the pizza aroma while playing.

Background on custom Xbox hardware

Microsoft has previously produced customized controllers and consoles as promotional items. Past examples include a red Xbox One X customized with Jordan branding and a specially modified Xbox One inspired by Taco Bell that reproduces a “bong” sound and features the chain’s ring motif.

The company has also released limited-edition consoles, such as a customized Xbox Series X with dark metallic panels, gold detailing and a star pattern themed to the Halo universe.
