Witcher 3 next-gen update may include fan-made mods

CD Projekt Red plans to relaunch The Witcher 3 this year with visual upgrades for next‑generation consoles, and some of those improvements could come directly from the game’s modding community.

Halk Hogan, the creator of the The Witcher 3 HD Reworked project — a mod that replaces the game’s original textures with higher‑resolution ones — said he received an official message from CD Projekt Red about cooperating on the release. “Although there is no certainty yet, it is very likely that the mod will be included in the official next‑gen update,” Hogan said.

Developer talks with modders for official release

CD Projekt Red confirmed to Kotaku that it is in negotiations with creators of other mods as it prepares the upcoming version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC. The original game was released in 2015 and won multiple awards in 2016.

The discussions suggest the studio is open to integrating community work into the official product. Hogan’s statement highlights a growing role for modders in the games industry: if contributors are properly credited and compensated, their work could become part of an official release enjoyed by millions of players.

Existing owners receive free upgrade

CD Projekt Red has said that players who already own The Witcher 3 in their libraries will receive the updated next‑generation version as a free update.

Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, director of The Witcher 3, has left CD Projekt Red after being cleared in an internal investigation into allegations of workplace bullying and moral harassment.

Following the accusations, CD Projekt Red appointed an independent commission to investigate. According to Bloomberg, the commission has not formally closed the case, but Tomaszkiewicz emailed staff saying he had been declared innocent and that he would choose to leave the company.

In his message he apologized “for any bad atmosphere” he may have contributed to at the studio and said he would work on improving his behavior.
