Use a PlayStation Controller on an Xbox?

Directly plugging a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 controller into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S (via USB or Bluetooth) will not work natively: Xbox consoles use XInput while PlayStation controllers use DirectInput, and the hardware does not recognize Sony peripherals by default.

How you can still use a PlayStation controller on Xbox consoles

There are two practical workarounds: a hardware adapter (dongle) that translates controller signals for the Xbox, or using the controller with Xbox Cloud Gaming on another device.

1. Third‑party USB adapters (dongles)

USB adapters from third‑party brands act as protocol translators so the Xbox believes a connected PlayStation controller is an Xbox controller. These adapters are the main way to make a DualShock 4 or DualSense function on an Xbox console.

  • Compatibility: Most modern adapters support both the DualShock 4 (PS4) and DualSense (PS5) and work across Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S systems.
  • Limitations: Advanced DualSense features—such as adaptive triggers and advanced haptic feedback—will not work because Xbox games are not built to support them. The controller will operate as a basic gamepad.
  • Performance considerations: Depending on adapter quality, some input lag may occur, which can be problematic for fast competitive titles like shooters or fighting games.

2. Using a PlayStation controller with Xbox Cloud Gaming

If you play Xbox games via cloud streaming (on PC, mobile devices, or a smart TV), connecting a PlayStation controller to the streaming device is generally supported. In this setup, the controller pairs with the device receiving the stream rather than the Xbox console itself.

Microsoft maintains a list of validated peripherals and confirms that controllers such as the DualShock 4 are supported and work correctly with Xbox Cloud Gaming (see verified devices).

Verdict

For native play on an Xbox console, you must purchase a third‑party adapter and accept the loss of PlayStation‑specific features. For streamed Xbox play through Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation controllers like the DualShock 4 are officially supported and work without additional adapters.
