Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo issued a joint statement on Monday, June 14, detailing agreed principles intended to make online gaming experiences safer for players across platforms.
The three companies said they believe “all players deserve to have fantastic social gaming experiences in environments where respect and safety are mutual.” Their announcement highlighted three central pillars: Prevention, Partnership and Responsibility.

Prevention: parental controls and safety technology
Under the Prevention pillar, the companies emphasized the availability of parental controls and tools designed to limit what younger or vulnerable players can access. They also referenced platform safety features and ongoing investment in technology to reduce harm and create safer gaming spaces.
Partnership: industry collaboration and community engagement
On Partnership, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo said collaboration is necessary not only among platform holders but also for game regulation and research that supports the wider industry. They stressed working with communities to counter hate, harassment and any exploitation of younger players within gaming environments.

Responsibility: rules, compliance and reporting
In the Responsibility section, the joint statement noted the publication of platform rules and terms of use, adherence to local laws and a clear stance against illegal conduct. The companies also pointed to mechanisms intended to make it easier for players to report misconduct.
Limits of the statement
The announcement concluded that “although the video game industry has a long history of taking steps to protect players, particularly children, we recognize that no single company or industry will solve these challenges alone,” underscoring the value of cooperation. The companies did not specify whether the joint statement will lead to concrete new policies or changes in practice.
