Physical Game Sales Plunge, Pushing Industry Toward Digital

Sales of physical game media dropped by half between 2021 and 2024, signaling a sharp shift in the industry as developers, platform holders and retailers move toward digital distribution.

Decline in physical sales and industry reaction

Data reported by The Verge show physical game sales have been falling for years, a trend that began after remote purchasing became widespread around 2008. According to Mat Piscatella, an analyst at Circana, there is a “long trend of decline in physical game sales.”

Piscatella said major companies are losing interest in distributing discs and are concentrating efforts on digital formats. Retailers have reduced shelf space for physical titles, publishers are releasing fewer boxed editions, and distribution is increasingly digital-focused.

Console makers and the move away from discs

Sony and Microsoft, the two largest console companies, are leading the transition away from physical media. The shift accelerated during the 2020 console generation, when both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 launched and manufacturers began offering disc-less console variants.

The companies previously clashed over digital sharing policies: Microsoft announced measures in 2013 that would have restricted sharing of digital games, prompting a public response from Sony and a Microsoft reversal at the time. Piscatella noted that by 2025 it is harder to envision a similar rollback, given the broader move toward digital distribution and reduced physical availability.

Consumer habits favor convenience

Changes in player behavior have reinforced the trend. Where early-2000s consoles often operated offline, today about 99% of consoles are connected to the internet. Piscatella said many consumers now choose convenience over the practical advantages of physical media.

Services such as Microsoft’s Game Pass exemplify that convenience: subscription access to large libraries reduces the need to buy individual discs, while digital storefronts let customers purchase and download games directly to cloud or console storage.

Signs of a fundamentally digital industry ahead

Microsoft has begun shifting even its boxed editions: for the recent game Avowed, physical boxes sometimes contained only a download code, rather than a disc. That approach suggests future releases could be distributed exclusively online.

Sony is expected to move more cautiously. The company still sells a disc-compatible PlayStation 5 model and offers a separate disc drive accessory for versions without one, reflecting concern about alienating its large installed base of disc users and favoring a gradual transition.

Nintendo appears likely to maintain physical formats longer. The company’s audience—particularly families—values the ease of sharing cartridges, and the Switch 2 will retain a cartridge slot and backward compatibility. Nintendo is exploring digital options, but the company intends to preserve physical media at least through the next Switch generation, which the source places around 2030.
