New Hellblade II dev trailer shows behind-the-scenes progress

Development footage for Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II was revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase Extended on Thursday, June 17, showing behind-the-scenes work on the game while its release date remains unannounced.

Team highlights progress, not a simple sequel

Tameem Antoniades, Ninja Theory’s chief creative officer, described the trailer as “a montage of the kind of work we’ve been doing.” He emphasized that the studio did not intend to deliver a straightforward sequel to the 2017 title and has pursued a more ambitious project.

Antoniades said the team is focused on building “a good and robust slice of the game” before moving into full production to complete the remainder. He also noted that Hellblade II is not necessarily a direct continuation of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, even though it follows the same protagonist.

Senua returns in ninth-century Iceland

The new game will follow Senua in ninth-century Iceland. Actress Melina Juergens, who portrays Senua, has been preparing to return to the role for two years. Animators have been training in combat to support high-quality in-game animation.

On-location shoots and practical references

Production traveled to Iceland to photograph locations for recreation in the game, and costumes were physically sewn to be replicated digitally. The development reel blends real-world footage, production process clips and in-engine or filmed material.

Hints of the story in voice work

The behind-the-scenes video closes with Senua’s voice delivering a line that may hint at narrative themes: “They may see them as gods, but we will show them what is behind our eyes.”

Platform, engine and availability

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is being developed with Unreal Engine 5 and will release for PC and Xbox. The title will be available on Game Pass. Ninja Theory became part of Xbox Game Studios in 2018. No launch date has been disclosed.
