Microsoft is urging game developers and publishers to provide free upgrades for Xbox titles so players can access the appropriate version for either Xbox One or the upcoming Xbox Series X via a feature called Smart Delivery, though the company will not make free updates mandatory.
What Smart Delivery does
Smart Delivery detects which Xbox console is running a game and downloads the best-suited build for that hardware. That means a title such as Halo Infinite can run on both Xbox Series X and Xbox One without players having to buy the game twice.
Microsoft encourages, developers decide
According to reporting that spoke with publishers familiar with Microsoft’s next-console plans, the company is encouraging developers to provide the Series X update at no additional cost. However, developers and publishers will ultimately decide whether to charge for upgrades.
Microsoft told the outlet that it will not force participation. “Developers and publishers decide how they will deliver their games, and we will work with them to provide the best possible experience according to their needs,” the company said.

Other upgrade and purchase options
Microsoft is exploring several approaches to ensure games are usable across both Xbox generations. Options mentioned include selling a bundle that contains both the Xbox One and Xbox Series X versions, offering a discount to owners who already have the Xbox One edition, or permitting publishers to set other pricing models.
How Smart Delivery differs from backward compatibility
Smart Delivery is distinct from the backward compatibility features included with Xbox Series X. Backward compatibility lets older titles from Xbox 360 and the original Xbox run on the new hardware, typically with more modest graphical improvements such as higher resolution or frame rates—similar to how backward compatibility has worked on Xbox One.
Player benefits beyond a single purchase
In addition to avoiding a second purchase for the same game, Smart Delivery will unify Xbox Live elements across consoles. Achievements, saved games and other Xbox Live features will carry over, allowing players to start a game like Halo Infinite on Xbox One and continue on Xbox Series X from the same point.
Timeline and upcoming event
Microsoft plans to launch Xbox Series X by the end of the year and is expected to reveal more console and game details in the coming weeks. The company has scheduled an event for July 23, where it is likely to present some of the first titles for the new console.
