Microsoft stops making two Xbox One models

Microsoft has ended manufacturing of two Xbox One models — the high-end Xbox One X and the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition — leaving the Xbox One S as the only Xbox One variant still in production until the new Xbox Series X arrives.

In a statement to The Verge, a Microsoft representative said the company “took the natural step of ending production of the Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition.” The announcement does not affect units that retailers already have in stock, which can still be sold.

What remains in production

Microsoft will continue to manufacture and sell the Xbox One S worldwide. The company expects the One S to serve as the entry-level Xbox model going forward, carrying support for both current-generation titles and select next-generation games.

How Microsoft is handling the transition to next-generation

The company plans to showcase games for the upcoming Xbox Series X on Thursday, June 23. While the event is not expected to include full launch details for the console, the end of production for the two Xbox One models is a strong signal that the Series X launch is imminent.

Microsoft has said it will keep releasing new games for the Xbox One for years to come. Through its Smart Delivery program, key titles developed for the Series X will also run on existing Xbox One hardware, though at reduced graphical quality compared with the new console.

Hardware lineup and strategy

According to information circulating about the lineup, the Xbox Series X will be the flagship model. Reports also suggest an intermediate console, internally referred to as Lockhart, could be offered; that device would take the place of the Xbox One X by running Series X games at lower graphical settings while remaining compatible with past Xbox titles.

Services and cloud gaming

Alongside multiple hardware options, Microsoft is increasing its focus on services. The company confirmed that Game Pass Ultimate will include access to its cloud gaming service, xCloud, when it launches in September.
